'Live' History in 6th Form

A 6th Form Parent, Mr.Britton, presented a fascinating seminar on 'The Great War' to two 6th Form groups in early March '09.
Using family history , a real army uniform and full battle kit, Mr.Britton recreated a world that mesmerised the boys. Using one of the class as a 'soldier', Mr.Britton gradually dressed him in full battle fatigue and explained the function of each 'piece' whilst hanging his explanations on the real narrative of a family ancestor who experienced the horrors of the Somme.

This was a 'history lesson' in the best sense - bring alive the past, contextualising the events, focusing on an individual's story and giving the class a sense of the human concerns and challenges of an Irishman in the early 20th century.
Congratulations and thanks to all involved.
