In November 2018, throughout STEM week, the hub proved a big hit with all the boys. From walking on eggs to creating bubbles, making Oobleck, and slime, blowing up balloons attached to plastic water bottles. Surgical scrubs and masks for on the spot surgeries in the ‘pop-up’ operating theatre, allowing the boys to be surgeons for the day.
Guest speakers ranged from doctors and scientists, to a pilot, chemist, dentist and ophthalmologist. Talks on coding, 3-D printing, communications as well as a special visit from the Defence Forces where the boys got to see a ‘robot’ at work and heard about a soldier’s life in the army, afforded the boys the opportunity to completely immerse themselves in the subjects of science, technology, engineering, and maths.
The fifty transition year students from Blackrock College that visited Willow Park came across the campus to Willow Park Junior School and guided the boys, who were so eager to listen and learn, through their experiments in a fun and helpful way. They explained the process to them and were so eager to listen and learn. A huge thank you to these wonderful students who are great role models for the younger boys in Willow.
