Willow Park Junior School - A Bully Free Zone

As part of Willow Park Junior School’s Bullying and Cyberbullying Awareness Week, the boys have been learning about bullying and cyberbullying. They have learned how everybody has a responsibility to look out for each other. Positive behaviour was promoted during the week with a range of age appropriate activities from stories, poems, drama and songs. Teachers used religion classes, SPHE lessons and circle time to focus on the topic of bullying.

Cyber-bullying Poem By Patrick (P5)

Cyber-bullies use abuse,
Emotional, verbal are at use.
As well as that there is threat’
They’re all over the internet.

They’re on games and media’s,
These are the web yes’ and no’s.
If you get an e-mail from a stranger,
Everything should say its danger.

You think it could be fun,
Think about the other option.
Always think before you type,
What you say might not be right.

You could think it could be cool,
But in the end it's just plain cruel.
Cyber-bullies are here and there,
In the end they’re everywhere.

So be careful on the web
If your safe you’ll be alright.

Willow Park Becoming a KiVa School

KiVa is an innovative evidence–based antibullying program which has been developed in Finland using cutting-edge research on bullying. No prevention efforts completely eradicate bullying but tools need to be utilized when bullying happens. KiVa is also interventive with clear guidelines on how to tackle bullying when it does take place. Online tools included in the KiVa program enable constant monitoring of any bullying situation in the school and the changes taking place over time. A KiVa registered school receives annual feedback about their implementation of the program and outcomes achieved.

Educating the boys to behave in constructive ways by taking responsibility from discouraging bullying and supporting vulnerable peers are key. Over this academic year, Willow Park Junior School plans to become a KiVa registered school.
